February is winter. Let no one tell you any different. Most of the things to be seen in February have always been seen in February. Yet, somehow, there is a feeling that spring is on the way. We are having more warmer days and fewer snow days. February is now a bit of a weird mix between winter and spring.
Robins, blackbirds, blue tits, great tits, coal tits, song thrushes and mistle thrushes are all starting to sing. Fieldfares will still be here. Lesser celandine will start flowering. Gorse, daisy and herb Robert will be present too. You’ll see snowdrops, non-native daffodils and crocuses. If you are lucky, you might see barren strawberry or primroses, yarrow should be appearing as well. I like to look out for catkins and the more spectacular flowers of hazel and holly. It’s still a good time to revel in mosses. If there is any snow look out for frost-heave. The first frog spawn should be appearing too. And, if you are really lucky, purple saxifrage.
