Bristly Ridge/Y Crib Bigog for Mountain Leaders
Bristly Ridge is frequently underestimated, route choices are not obvious and it is a consequential scramble which pushes the scope and comfort of most mountain leaders. It is, however, a brilliant route that follows on impressively from a traverse of Tryfan. We’ll take a look at the various starts and evaluate each one in turn. We’ll ascend the ridge identifying the most dangerous sections. We’ll work through the best route to lead people on and look at various ways of descending, but we'll probably come down Y Gribin. If the weather is dry then a lightweight scrambling boot or even approach shoes might be the best footwear. The weather doesn't affect the route greatly so we're unlikely to postpone the event. The ratio of 1:4 reflects the seriousness of the terrain encountered on the scramble.
You must be comfortable on scrambling terrain. This is a workshop for Mountain Leaders who are thinking about leading Bristly Ridge rather than a scrambling workshop for trainees
Please come ready for a hill day whatever the weather. Bring your packed lunch and a drink. I'll have a blizzard bag, small first aid kit and a group shelter.

From October 2026 this workshop will be run by the amazing Jenny Dart. Jenny has been working with me on these workshops for a while now. She is a fully qualified mountaineering instructor who works on Skye and spends a lot of time in the Alps. Jenny is also an active member of the Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Team and as such is more accomplished than most people in the terrain encountered on this day. She’ll give you a brilliant day on my behalf.
