Spend a day on Tryfan discussing how Mountain Leaders can work with groups on the classic north ridge scramble and remain within the scope of the qualification and your experience.
In April and October 2026 this workshop will be run by the amazing Jenny Dart (I'll run the June one.) Jenny has been working with me on these workshops for a while now. She is a fully qualified mountaineering instructor who works on Skye and spends a lot of time in the Alps. Jenny is also an active member of the Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Team and as such is more accomplished than most people in the terrain encountered on this day. She’ll give you a brilliant day on my behalf.
The north ridge of Tryfan is one our best known and loved mountain routes, but it does have its ‘traps’. I know myself it took several ascents before I managed to go the same way twice! Come and join me and fast forward your experience by taking the benefit of mine. This is not a ropework refresher. We will be exploring one or two of the variants, particularly around the forbidding north tower, looking for the best route at grade one. The idea of the workshop is to look at route choice, decision making, group sizes, personal familiarisation, assessing your group and relevant environment topics.
This workshop is for qualified mountain leaders who want to work on Tryfan and would like to develop their own understanding of scrambling ground in relation to the Mountain Leader scheme. The workshop will qualify for one Mountain Training Association CPD point. Come in your personal hill kit ready for any weather and don’t forget your packed lunch. Please make sure you are fit enough for the day and that you are happy on rocky terrain. Most people wear light, grippy boots, walking shoes or crag approach. These all work well for most people as we are on rocky ground all day.
Meeting Time 09.00
