Managing Hazards and Emergencies in the Mountains
Have you ever wondered how you might cope in an emergency? How do you think it might feel being alone and in charge in the hills when an accident occurs? Have you heard tales of things that might happen, but never seem to? How do you call for help if your phone isn’t working? Can you look after a group, a casualty and yourself in a tough situation? How emotional would all this be?
This one-day workshop will take place in steep ground in the Carneddau. It will be a practical day during which we will investigate and dynamically risk assess the various hazards found in our hills. We’ll take time out to consider the what if’s and walk through emergency procedures. We’ll do this in locations where there is phone reception and in areas where there is no phone reception.
This workshop will be run by the amazing Jenny Dart. Jenny has been working with me on workshops for a while now. She is a fully qualified mountaineering instructor who works in Eryri and on Skye, she also spends a lot of time in the Alps. Jenny is also an active member of the Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Team and as such is more familiar than most people with the challenges laid bare on this workshop. Jenny is qualified as a Remote Rescue Medical Technician and a WEMSI Wilderness Medical Technician qualification. She is on the faculty for World Extreme Medicine - teaching on Wilderness and Expedition Medicine and Search and Rescue Medicine courses.
The aim of the day is to take away some of the anxiety you may be feeling about having to deal with these situations as a mountain leader and give you a series of practical, rational and logical steps to follow.
We'll be on the hill all day, so come prepared, in hillwalking gear, for the prevailing conditions, with a packed lunch and a drink.
